The case
On Lantern Night, 1953, every window in Porthgrey was lit. By midnight the Harbor Master lay dead at the foot of the Customs House stairs, and the ledger he never let out of his sight was gone. The town blamed his son. His son said nothing for the rest of his life.
Seventy-three years later, his daughter finds the ledger behind a panel in the attic, with a note in her father’s hand.
Retired Scotland Yard detective Edmund Hale has the ledger, the witness statements and the town register: 7,140 names, and one of them belongs to a killer. He needs a partner. He needs you.
