Clare Hale

Clare Hale taught music at a girls’ school in south London for thirty years and never once let her husband bring a case file to the dinner table. She did the crossword in ink, beat him at it most mornings, and had firm plans for his retirement, most of them involving the south of France.

Hale rarely talks about her. When he does, it is usually to say that she would have solved it faster.
