Marsh cottages at the edge of town, reached by a causeway that floods at high tide. The people of the Saltings cut reeds, dig bait and keep their own counsel. An old man mending a net there told me Porthgrey “is a town that remembers everything and says nothing”, and then said nothing more for twenty minutes.
