Alleys so tight two people cannot pass without one of them stepping into a doorway.
From Hale’s notebook
Nobody drew a map of the Narrows until the twentieth century, and it shows. The lanes are named for whatever used to happen in them: Tallow Lane, Soot Lane, Wick Lane. I got lost twice in an afternoon, in broad daylight, sober. On Lantern Night, with a candle in every window, I am told it looks like the inside of a church.
