Westcut grew up beyond the railway cutting in the thirties, and after the war the council filled the gaps with prefabs meant to last ten years. Several are still standing. In 1953 these streets were full of newcomers: railwaymen, clerks, families bombed out of Plymouth. Newcomers notice things. The old town has never quite forgiven them for it.
